Michael,
Thank you so much for the sharing the link to Malcolm Gladwell. I am always looking to learn and explore others perspectives. Leadership is a critical component in building a team. It doesn't take much to have a dialog with the "necessary people" keeping things moving forward. It's motivating, enlightening and deepens the employee engagement. Employees want to know they are working toward something bigger than just a paycheck. They also want to have an understanding for how their work impacts the mission. It's that connection that becomes truly powerful and allows leaders to tap into the potential on their team.
Cheers!

Kelly
Excellent post encouraging a depth of teamwork and value-driven work.
A relevant piece by Malcolm Gladwell applies Jane Jacobs community perspective to workplaces (http://www.netform.com/html/newyorker.pdf). Jacobs saw community as emerging from dialog among the "necessary people" who kept day-to-day life rolling along.
Leadership is critical. It becomes more effective in workplaces that through the design of space, time, and tasks promote interactions among employees that move the mission forward.
All the best,
Michael

I'm a big fan of Joe Gibbs organization (not so much NASCAR, sorry) for the very reason you point out. Everyone knows how they contribute to the vision of the group. Great post drilling down to everyone knowing their role, who benefits and how it impacts the overall performance. Mike...

Nice comparison Kelly! It's a good reminder for all of us to have that team mentality if we want to succeed, no matter which field we're in. Thanks for the encouragement & wisdom...keep it up! Lisa
